Custom wood working by Jake Mellow. Jake graduated from Shepherd University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts and 2019 with a Master of Arts.
Each one-of-a-kind piece is hand made by Jake Mellow in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. Products include cutting boards, bowls, clip boards, wooden boxes, pens, kitchen utensils, picture frames, wood turned products, and more. The wood used comes from a variety of locations ranging from local area, across the US, and even some from international areas such as Brazil and Africa. To best up-keep your products, follow these instructions: Cutting Boards, Wood Knives, Utensils, Food-safe wood turned products: Hand wash and dry only! Water seeping into the wood can cause odors, warping, or cracking of the product. Store the product away from moisture or high heat and be sure to keep wet or hot items from sitting on it for prolonged amounts of time. If you would like to remove the scratches from the board, lightly sand it with a 220-320 grit sand paper and re-apply oil. Mellow Works uses Howard's Brand cutting board oil, but you can use olive oil, mineral oil, "Wood Butter" which is a blend of mineral oils and bees wax, or some other food safe oil. DO NOT use polyurethane, polyacrylic, motor/engine oils on cutting boards, bowls/platters, or kitchen utensils, IT IS NOT FOOD SAFE. Other finishes such as shellac, sanding sealer, and non-food safe waxes are also not recommended. Clip Boards: Clip boards don't need much up-keep, but if you'd like to return the shine to your board, you can use Danish Oil, Orange Oil/Bee's Wax, or other Wood-safe refinishing oils. I use Howard's Brand Orange Oil/Bee's Wax combo that is typically found near the wood stain in home improvement stores. Avoid storing your clipboard near moisture, windows, or heaters, it could cause cracking and warping. Other Wood Products: For the most part, non-kitchen use items should not need much upkeep past dusting/cleaning and occasional oiling. You can use the same products to upkeep and re-shine as Clip boards listed above on most wood products. Although products are sealed, prolonged moisture, heat, or cold on wood tables can cause swelling, chipping, staining, and rotting of the wood, so use a coaster for drinks and a mat, kitchen towel, or "hot-pot" on tables. Custom and Commission Pieces: In order to provide the best product in a timely manner, Mellow Works asks that payment options and delivery dates are discussed up-front.
